Charging 101
Electric vehicles (EVs) can be charged using standard outlets (110V), which is called Level 1 charging, or at Level 2 stations (which use 240V outlets). High energy consuming appliances, such as clothes dryers, use outlets with this voltage. EVs can also be charged at Level 3 or Direct Current fast charge (DCFC) stations (480V). Level 1 charging will charge a light-duty vehicle completely in eight to 17 hours, depending on the size of the vehicle’s battery. At a Level 2 station most light-duty vehicles will be fully charged in four to 10 hours. Finally, in order to make charging while away from home quick and convenient, even faster charging stations are being installed in some locations: a DCFC station can charge a Ford Mustang Mach-e from 10 percent to 80 percent capacity in about 38 minutes.
