In January 2017, the City of Los Angeles and 30 other U.S. cities issued an Electric Vehicle Request for Information (RFI), which helped aggregate and better understand municipal demand for EVs. Feedback and suggestions received through that process led to the development of the Climate Mayors EV Purchasing Collaborative.

The Collaborative works to leverage the buying power of Climate Mayors cities to reduce the costs of EVs and charging infrastructure for all U.S. cities, counties, courts, school districts, state governments, and public universities, thereby accelerating fleet transitions. The Collaborative also provides training, best practices, educational resources, and analysis support, creating a one-stop shop to support EV transitions for public fleets.

On September 11, 2018, at the Los Angeles Forum on Clean Transportation, Mayor Garcetti launched the Climate Mayors EV Purchasing Collaborative where municipal fleets from around the U.S. announced a large-scale commitment to electrification. With the leadership of founding cities, this announcement spurred national transition to electrification, improving air quality, driving innovation, and helping America maintain its commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement.
